DIYcouture has made two unusual clothing collections: rather than purchasing 

a garment, the DIYcouture customer purchases a set of simple, visual 

instructions, which enable them to make that garment themselves.

The instructions remove the need for complex sewing patterns. Diagrams and pictures take the maker through the creation

 process, so that unique, personally fitted pieces of clothing are accessible to anyone.

The DIYcouture collections are groups of simple, classic pieces that can be

 almost endlessly re-invented.

These form the seed of an infinite, mushrooming mega collection by a multitude of makers. Each of the pieces is a possibility 

brought to life again and again in a new incarnation by every person that chooses to sew it themselves.

Inspired by the thousands of invisible pairs of hands around the globe that make the clothes we buy, DIYcouture hopes 

to inspire people to get up to their elbows in the 3-dimensional world of creation. It supports the slow revolution.

 Helping people to produce garments that are precious, rather than disposable, this is the antithesis of fast-fashion.

Summer might seem far away but savvy travellers are already planning ahead, and those busy arranging a trip to Florence should not forget to make time for a visit to theSalvatore Ferragamo Museum, which will be hosting an exhibition dedicated toMarilyn Monroe’s shoes from June 2012 until January 2013. What better way to learn a little about art, fashion and the world’s most iconic film star?

Salvatore Ferragamo converted shoe design into an art form to which he dedicated his entire life, opening his first shop at the age of 13 just outside of Naples. His almost obsessive quest for the perfect shoe lead him to study everything from human anatomy to mathematics, and took him across the Atlantic to the USA, then back toItaly again, where he felt he could find the best craftmanship. Salvatore’s methods were were scientific and precise, yet his creations were, and still are, beautifully whimsical and playful, works of art in their own right.

It was the opening of Ferragamo’s Hollywood Boot Shop in California that placed him at the very epicentre of the world’s most prolific film industry and cemented his position as shoemaker to the stars of the silver screen. The era’s biggest icon, Marilyn Monroe, was no exception.

Throughout the 1950s, he designed more than 40 gorgeous pairs of shoes for Monroe that contributed to her iconic image, helping to form the legend that she subsequently became. The exhibition will showcase much of this footwear, as well as other items of clothing and artwork dedicated to the star. The exhibition will include treasures such as beautiful Dorothy-esque Swarovski crystal shoes, a red version of the pair worn by Monroe in Let’s Make Love, although the star of the show will undoubtedly be the slinky stilettos paired with thatbillowing white dress in The Seven Year Itch in one of the most iconic images of all time.

Crazy But Amazing Shoes!!

Brian Atwood Spring 2012 & Walter Steiger Spring 2012 Collections

Bright yellows, oceanic turquoise, grass-green,  soft gray - Atwood used such a variety of colors keeping the collection playful, sexy and vibrant for spring/summer. There’s also several different types of embellishment including fringe, chunky gold chain, gold mesh, mini belts, braided raffia and embroidered leather inspired by Native American patchwork.

Walter Stegier’s Spring 2012 collection is the perfect paradox. We see delicate, minimalistic sandals like thePunchy and Philo and also several bold designs like the Prunelle and Prestance featuring the signature curved Steiger heel. Materials include raphia, patent leather, python and crocodile with a mix of bright neon tones. Most recently we’ve seen Elizabeth Banks in the Muse, Malin Akerman in the Punchy and Fergie wore the Prestance to the Grammys.

"Those sugarplum shoe fairies also happened upon a little gated street, circa 2007/2008, behind the Royal Hospital in Whitechapel, London. Inhabited, for the most part, by University of the Arts students. There they discovered the lovely Elizabeth Dunn and shared some of their fabulous footwear magic with her too. I was lucky enough to live on the aforementioned little gated street at that time, just a few doors away from the talented Miss Dunn herself - and now she makes the sorts of shoes that dreams are made of.
